Betawi Culture





Kerak telor is original food of Jakarta or we known Betawi. Keraqk telor makes with materials like white glutinous rice, chicken egg, ebi or dried shrimp that salted, dry roasted added with fried red onion, then be given grinded spices is toasted coconut,  red chili, kencur, ginger, pepper, salt and sugar.

History kerak telor originated from the colonial era. Kerak telor is special food, and served in big party of colonial government or person Betawi who rich. However over the times, kerak telor has now become a peoples dishes that can be enjoyed by anyone. 

How to make food is quite unique because it is not cooked on the stove, but cooked on a bonfire. Trader occasionally reverse frying pan so surface of the kerak telor roasted and cooked through while fanned to fan that ember still burning. After dried and cooked kerak telor ready to be served.

Now, kerak telor had been become scarce foods that are difficult to be found in everyday life, then it also should be no conservation measures.

Kerak telor seems displaced by modern food and process modern food that is very fast and ready to served.

In modern era, kerak telor no longer dominated by people of Betawi, some of them come from Padang, Tegal, Garut and Cimahi.
